Iolo Nouveau

Don't want you guys to think I've forgotten you. Here's another art update for you. This one is an illustration I did to experiment with a flatter more art nouveau style.

A Watery Grave

Not your usual take on the saying but a fitting title I thought for this pic. I'd like you tell you more about what's going on here but you guys will just have to wait and see ;)

...completely different?

Another Iolo but this time taking a somewhat different approach. It was advised that I try my hand at more lineart images that could be applied to a portfolio as book interiors, and as the Southern Story is going through a bit of a rewrite at the moment I figured I'd have a more serious go at the boy king.

Shining Light

Been rewriting some old parts of the Southern story lately which features a young Iolo; one of the grumpiest kings the South has ever known.

Having realised I need more lip synch in my showreel I've decided to have a crack at some now that there's no ore uni work to do (still finding that weird). I've spent the last couple evenings just roughing this out, when this is finished it'll be Iolo and Jerry.

The audio is from a clip of Night at the Museum II, which I love.

To go along with this here's an updated Iolo design I made especially for this clip. Plus a random Rhammi.

Iolo

A long awaited addition to my group of character portraits. Had him sitting in my doodle folder for a couple weeks now and decided to finish him off this evening. Overall I'm fairly pleased with his fluffiness - especially as I've been on a bit of a reading spree lately with old stuff of him and he was a grumpy, grumpy old man so it's nice to se him cheerful.

In short: yay happy Iolo!

The (not so) New World

After spending the past four days colouring frames for Gums I decided to have a break and do a little world building.  This is Thea the world that most of my ocs come from. The guys you'll have seen the most so far are the southerners. (The name for themselves is the Solaai)

It wasn't until tonight that fellow creator Kovah and I came up with the name of the world and the landmasses, even though they've existed in the story for quite a while but once we had names one thing led to another and here we go.

The naming here is actually mostly what the southerners have called everything as most of the action occurs on Ellisto and they're the main explorers and book keepers so they get to pick ;). The Titoans probably use very similar names considering the southern ancestors first sailed from Tito to colonise the southernmost parts of Ellisto. No one knows what names the Ganyeans use because no-one's really had the chance to have a chat with them.

Enough of my rambling...frame colouring gives me waaay to much time to think about these things. Enjoy,

Grumpy

A little doodle I did last night of Iolo as a kid, he was grumpy even then.

Pluffy

Because Iolo is prone to be both plump and fluffy...and bow legged apparently.

He is not happy that I let you see him in his underwear.

Despite being a proud Southerner all his life Iolo isn't quite used to this coastal mode of transport....

And yus, he's not wearing his usual purple but I figure in a country that's especially keen on colour and pattern you'd have to go for a change once in a while.

It's Been a While...

...so here's an update :)

Firstly some sketches from Andrew Loomis' Figure Drawing for all it's Worth, an awesome book for anyone wanting to study figure drawing.

Now some Alaya sketches for the current idea of planning for my final project and a shot of her with her grandfather Iolo just to test out their colour schemes.

And finally more stuff for Feathers, I've been working on Tafti's design and apart from the colour scheme and wings I have to admit he has changed a fair bit 

Little Changes

After going in and animating earlier this week I came to the realization that while I love taller, more realistically proportioned characters when designing I just loath trying to animate them, and I'd rather not spend the year cursing a light box every time I see one.

So I gave in and decided while I still intend on using Tafti and the 'Feathers' idea for one of my modules I'm going to use him, and the cartoon version of my character Iolo (here written as Yolo to help people pronounce his name right) in a simplified style. Because by gum I enjoy drawing them, they may not be uber impressive but they make me happy to pick up a pencil.

Next up I need to clean up Tafti as well as think of a way to make Alaya, who is Iolo's grandkid, into a cartoon to work with him when he's been shrunk down to pretty much her 'realistic' proportions.

Here's the Yolo redesign, some of you may recognize him from a series of short animation tests I did earlier this year.

Sun Arise

Another pic of Iolo, this time with a slightly wider view of his home as the southerner's themselves see it, a place of beaches, warmth and calm....unlike the northern view which is just a giant, dusty, litterbox.

The title is what it is 'cause I've been listening to Rolf Harris a lot recently and that song particularly seemed to fit with my mood while working.

Because like Enoch it's rare for me to go a while without doodling Iolo, so here he is with his grandkids, Feld, Gerin and Alaya, (Least I think that''s it, can only really remember Alaya's for sure :P)
